Brendan Haug, Associate Professor of Classical Studies & Archivist of the Papyrology Collection at the University of Michigan, will introduce us to the Michigan Papyrus Collection. It is the largest collection of primary documents from ancient Egypt in the Western Hemisphere. After a general history of the collection, we will look at a selection of textual genres to reveal what ancient people committed to writing and what these documents can tell us about the lives of non-elite Egyptians during the Graeco-Roman period (3rd cent. BC to 7th cent. AD).
