Richard Bowmaster, a human rights scholar, hits the car of Evelyn, a young, undocumented immigrant, in the middle of a snowstorm in Brooklyn. What at first seems like just a small inconvenience takes a far more serious turn when Evelyn turns up at the professor's house seeking help. At a loss, Richard asks his tenant, Lucia Maraz, for her advice. As these three lives intertwine, each discovers truths about how past tragedies have shaped their lives, and Richard and Lucia find unexpected, long-overdue love. This novel by Isabel Allende encompasses present-day Brooklyn, Guatemala in the recent past, and Chile and Brazil in the 1970s, and offers a timely message about immigration and the meaning of home.
